Free your Hair from the Tyranny of Too Much Sulfate!

Did you know that the main ingredient in most shampoos and conditioners is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a detergent which actually strips your hair of its natural oils and moisture? This includes most brands promoted as “herbal”, while brands boasting of “natural fruit extracts” actually contain less than 1% fruit extracts?

In forever’s Sonya Shampoo and Conditioner on the other hand, the main ingredient is pure aloe vera which naturally moisturises your hair and heals your scalp leaving your hair naturally healthy and gleaming.

The range includes Sonya Hydrate, and Sonya Volume. Click on the links for more information on Sonya Hydrate.

“I suffered from severe dermatitis on my scalp for years and tried many different types of expensive and organic shampoo, but none of them worked. When I tried Forever Living’s Sonya Hydrate hair products, I loved them – especially the conditioner. They are really good products, and as a result I don’t have eczema any more. Thank God I found this product!” – Catherine Roy, Montreal.

Aloe Vera is amazing for your hair.

Aloe Vera contains saponin, a natural foaming ingredient which behaves like soap to clean and antibacterialise your scalp and hair, without being harsh on your hair like a chemical detergent such as SLS. In fact the word saponin and the word for soap come from the same Latin root. Gladly, it occurs naturally in Aloe Vera, which makes it perfect for cleaning your hair (and all other parts of your body) without harsh chemicals.

Aloe vera also contains something called proteolytic enzymes, which repair dead skin cells on the scalp.

It also acts as a great natural conditioner and leaves your hair all smooth and shiny. It promotes hair growth, prevents itching on the scalp, reduces dandruff and conditions your hair.

Diane Gage, author of  Aloe Vera: Nature’s Soothing Healer says, “Keratin, the primary protein of hair, consists of amino acids, oxygen, carbon, and small amounts of hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulphur. Aloe vera has a chemical make up similar to that of keratin and it rejuvenates the hair with its own nutrients, giving it more elasticity and preventing breakage.”

Forever Sonya Shampoo and Conditioner contains no parabens, propylene glycol, SLS or SLES

What’s really in your “herbal” shampoo?

Ingredients on beauty products are always listed in descending order of weight, although those that make up less than 1 per cent of the product can be listed in any order at all.

Around 80 per cent of most shampoo is water (often listed on the label in other languages, as Aqua or Eau) which almost always means that if you want to know what’s making up the bulk of your shampoo, you only really need to take a look at the top six ingredients. The rest will exist in such small quantities as to be negligible.

As you can see on the Garnier label below, aqua is the main ingredient while Sodium Laureth Sulfate (a detergent) is the next main ingredient. (For more information about SLS see the next section).

Luxury ingredients like citrus fruit are so far down that you can guarantee they exist in quantities less than 1%. Including them in tiny amounts makes them a great selling point for Garnier. Pictures of citrus on the bottle make people think they are getting natural benefits from the product. But are they?

The following ingredients label is from a Clairol “Herbal Essences” Touchably Smooth shampoo. No surprises there – two forms of SLS make up the main ingredients. Citrus is far down on its list. Colour additives included.

Forever Hydrate’s main ingredient is pure Aloe Vera

Imagine if you could slice open an Aloe plant and put the aloe vera directly onto your scalp to moisturise, heal, and soothe. Forever Sonya shampoo and conditioner is the closest you can get to that.

Below is the label from our Sonya Hydrate Shampoo. As you can see, the MAIN ingredient (before even water!) is Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice. Considering that most shampoos are 80% water, while most of the rest is made up of soap/detergent, and only contain less than 1% of “herbal” and “fruit” ingredients, this is a big deal.

This means that unlike other shampoos and conditioners, the main thing you are putting on your hair is the NATURAL, non-drying benefits of Aloe Vera, rather than just a load of detergent with a minute percentage of herbal ingredients.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

The MAIN ingredient in most shampoos and conditioners, such as the Garnier and Herbal Essences discussed earlier, is Sodium Lauryl (or Laureth) Sulfate. If you read any shampoo or conditioner label, you will notice it is usually one of the FIRST ingredients listed (usually after water/aqua).

SLS is a cheap, easily obtainable detergent and surfactant – it helps produce a nice foamy lather so the shampoo can effectively remove dirt and oil from your hair.

It’s no cause for alarm. There is no actual evidence to suggest that SLS is dangerous to your health in small amounts, however many people do not feel comfortable pouring large amounts of detergent into their hair.

That’s because sulfate is a detergent which actually strips your hair of its natural protective oils. The hair reacts to this trauma by overproducing MORE oil, so a day or so after washing, your hair becomes unbearably oily again. Because of this you have to keep using shampoo and conditioner more often to keep it in good condition. Your hair is no longer able to care for itself in its natural way, so you literally become dependent on the product to keep it a form of “healthy”. But really it is just damaging your hair.

Aloe Vera has natural foaming properties which reduce the necessity for excessive detergent additives. A little bit of SOME type of sulfate is unavoidable as it is a necessary ingredient, but the sulfate content in Forever Sonya shampoo and conditioner is far smaller than other commercial shampoos which list a sulfate as the first (main) ingredient!

So if you want to dramatically reduce the harsh drying effect of using too much detergent sulfate on your hair, without checking out of society, going to live alone a as a hermit, and stopping washing your hair altogether, Forever Sonya shampoo and conditioner is your absolute best choice!

“I bleached my hair and then dyed it blue, so it was suffering a lot of damage! Since I started using Forever Hydrate, my hair is recovering and is so much healthier! I find that now I only have to wash my hair once a week because of the moisturising effects of its main ingredient, aloe vera, which is less drying than other shampoos and conditioners which I had to use daily in the past. Because I don’t need to wash as often, I’m saving money as well as saving my hair from exposure to harsh chemicals! Plus, it smells amazing!– Anouk Bongers, Forever Living Independent Business Owner, Cairns, Australia.

The first time I used Forever Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner, I noticed the difference straight away. My hair stayed cleaner for longer. With previous products, I needed to wash my hair every day or it would become oily and limp. Now I can leave it for several days and it still doesn’t feel oily! My hair is now longer than ever before because I have less breakage and damage, and it is more shiny, smooth and soft.

Major brands of hair products, including Palmolive, Sunsilk and Pantene, still allow animal testing of their products

Although Australian laws make it very difficult to test products on animals within Australia, many overseas-based companies like Colgate/Palmolive, Procter & Gamble (who own Gillette, Pantene, Oral-B, Covergirl, and others) and Unilever (who own Dove, Rexona, Lynx, SunSilk, and others) still allow animal testing of their products.
