10 Reasons to Switch to Aluminium-Free Deodorant

Did you know that most antiperspirants on the market, are up to 20% aluminium, a metal proven to be toxic? For years, health authorities have warned us against cooking on aluminium pans, or keeping opened food in aluminium cans. At high levels, it is an established neurotoxin, can cause kidney problems, and has been linked to Alzheimer’s.

That’s if the aluminium goes into your mouth. But what happens if you’re rubbing it onto your skin, very close to organs such as your lymph nodes and breast tissue, day in, and day out?

The only reason so many cosmetic companies still get away with including it in their deodorant products, is because very little research has been done into how exactly it affects us if we rub it on our armpits every day.

But why risk it? It took years for health authorities to finally realise that cooking on aluminium pans was a bad idea. Why wait for them to come to a similar conclusion about deodorant, when there is a safe, EFFECTIVE, aluminium-free deodorant available?

9 Reasons to Switch to Aluminium-Free Deodorant:

1. Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis links

Professor Chris Exley, a world-renowned aluminium expert, believes that accumulation of aluminium in the body is a risk factor not only for Alzheimer’s disease but may also be linked to other neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis.

“During the last ten years my group has investigated the link between aluminium and Alzheimer’s disease in more than 100 human brains and our findings have led us to one very simple conclusion.

We must now accept that where the aluminium content of an individual’s brain tissue exceeds a certain level that this aluminium will contribute towards any ongoing Alzheimer’s disease in that individual.

Recent research suggests that we can protect ourselves against the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease by taking measures to reduce our everyday exposure to aluminium.”

Exley, who is Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Keele University, has been researching aluminium for a quarter of a century. His office is piled high with books on the subject, and he has contributed to scores of peer-reviewed papers and publications.

“We know aluminium can be toxic, yet there is no legislation to govern how much of it is present in anything, apart from drinking water.

When the amount of aluminium consumed exceeds the body’s capacity to excrete it, the excess is then deposited in various tissues, including nerves, brain, bone, liver, heart, spleen and muscle. We call it the ‘silent visitor’ because it creeps into the body and beds down in our bones and brain.”

2. Links to cancer

A potential link between aluminium and breast cancer was also found in a study by the abovementioned Professor Chris Exley.

A higher content of aluminium was found in breast tissue samples – taken from 17 women with breast cancer who had mastectomies at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester – near the underarm area where anti-perspirants and deodorants are applied.

“Although the presence of aluminium in the breast does not, in itself, imply any causal link to breast cancer, it does underline the need for more research, especially in view of the known toxicity of aluminium,” said Dr Exley.

Although this research does not prove whether aluminium has any carcinogenic effect, it is still considered a safe practice, especially for a pregnant women, or people who have suffered with cancer at some point in their life, to use an non-aluminium deodorant.

3. What You Put ON Your Skin Can Be More Dangerous Than What You Eat

Putting chemicals on your skin or scalp may actually be worse than eating them. When you eat something, the enzymes in your saliva and stomach help to break it down and flush it out of your body. However, when you put these chemicals on your skin, they are absorbed straight into your bloodstream without filtering of any kind, going directly to your delicate organs.

Once these chemicals find their way into your body, they tend to accumulate over time because you typically lack the necessary enzymes to break them down. There are literally thousands of chemicals used in personal care products.

Some people argue that the amount of aluminium in deodorant is very small and therefore doesn’t matter – but considering that you probably apply it at LEAST once a day (probably more than that), for most of your adult life –  the amount of exposure to yourself (and, if you’re pregnant, your unborn child) is worth thinking twice about.

4. Aluminium CAN be absorbed through the skin according to the FDA.

The United States Food and Drug Administration Authority (FDA) has acknowledged that “small amounts of aluminium can be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and through the skin,” leading to a warning that “daily use of antiperspirant drug products containing aluminium may put (people with kidney problems) at a higher risk because of exposure to aluminium in the product.”

5. Aluminium is linked to kidney problems

According to the FDA, “People with renal dysfunction may not be aware that the daily use of antiperspirant drug products containing aluminium may put them at a higher risk because of exposure to aluminium in the product.”

The agency warns people with renal dysfunction to consult a doctor before using antiperspirants containing aluminum. And if that’s true for people with renal problems, why should it be considered safe for anyone else?

6. Aluminium just blocks your pores and doesn’t actually eliminate odours

Sweat itself has no odour; but the bacteria that feed on the sweat, in the warm moist environment of your armpits, are what produce the smell. It’s easy to kill the bacteria (and therefore eliminate the smell) without stopping the body’s natural sweating process.

Antiperspirants contain aluminium, which blocks and shrinks the pores to reduce sweating by about 20%.

Deodorants use anti-bacterial ingredients to kill the bacteria which causes the smells, while still allowing your body to sweat naturally.

The human body is designed to sweat. Sweating is a natural process which happens all over our body (not just the armpits) and we don’t try to rub antiperspirant all over our body to stop the other parts from sweating! Sweating is our body’s way of cooling itself down, and we accept that if we are going to do exercise, or be in a hot environment, we will sweat. A sweaty body can even look sexy! So for most people, sweat is not the problem. It’s simply the SMELL that we want to eliminate.

Since adding aluminium only reduces sweating by about 20%, most antiperspirants rely on deodorising ingredients to eliminate odour anyway. So why bother with the aluminium ingredient at all, if it hardly works, is potentially poisonous, and is not as effective as deodorant ingredients at eliminating odours?

7. Aluminium stains your clothes

Aluminium salts are the culprits in yellow stains on clothing. Forever Ever-Shield Deodorant will not stain your clothes.

8. Aerosol deodorants contribute to global warming
