9 Days, No Sugar: My New Year’s Resolution 2016

Imagine what nine days with no refined sugar, alcohol, or coffee, and a high intake of nutritious superfoods instead, could do for your body!

Starting on Wednesday, March 9, I am going to take the Forever Clean 9 Challenge, a 9-day cleanse program. This means I am going to go nine whole days without refined sugar, alcohol, coffee and a high intake of nutritious superfoods instead! If you know me and how much of a sugar addict I am, then you will realise what a huge challenge this is for me!

Why Quit Sugar?

I wanted a a health-related challenge for my New Year’s Resolution this year and since I don’t smoke, giving up my biggest addiction, sugar, seemed like the most appropriate challenge for me to take on. From the litres of chocolate milk (Milo) that I drink every day, to the pint of tomato ketchup I put on every meal, to my penchant for sweet snacks… it’s obvious that refined sugar (or more specifically, fructose) is my weak spot, and my worst health habit!

Little wonder, since scientists have now shown in brain scans that sugar is as addictive as Cocaine. It releases dopamine in our brain, just like other stimulant drugs, which keeps us reaching for those sugary treats. Unfortunately, a lifetime of high sugar-consumption has a raft of nasty side-effects including Type II Diabetes, liver disease, high blood pressure, tooth decay, depression, anxiety, heart disease, loss of skin elasticity (wrinkles), polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, Alzheimer’s disease, accelerated tumour growth in cancer sufferers, digestive problems, and more. Many of these diseases were once considered old-peoples’ diseases, but are now being diagnosed younger and younger. Scientists are now calling sugar “the new tobacco” and calling for it to be regulated and taxed because it is killing more people than alcohol and tobacco combined! It truly is an epidemic.

But what’s most terrifying is that up to a third of all people diagnosed with problems such as fatty liver, high blood pressure, and early stages of insulin resistance DO NOT LOOK OBESE. So, even if you look relatively thin like me, that is not an excuse to continue gorging on sugary treats until it’s too late. Sugar destroys your organs from the inside!

What do I mean by “sugar”?

First, let’s get this straight: when I say quit “sugar”, I’m not talking about the broader food groups that are sometimes referred to as “sugars”, such as carbohydrates, glucose, dextrose, maltose, lactose or galactose.

I’m talking about substances which contain high concentrations of FRUCTOSE. Fructose is the sweet-tasting substance which is the main ingredient in table sugar (sucrose)/cane sugar, maple syrup, golden syrup, honey, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), Agave, and nearly all other sweeteners found in food nowadays.

Fructose is also found in fruit, and I’m not going to quit eating fruit because whole fruit contains fibre and lots of other healthy nutrients. I’m simply quitting eating fructose in its refined and concentrated forms.

In its most familiar form, it’s found in that grainy white stuff which we commonly call “table sugar”, or sucrose. Sucrose is made from a type of sweet grass called sugar cane and is exactly 50% fructose. The other half is glucose, which is harmless. But it’s the high concentration of fructose that is of most concern.  As you will soon learn on this website, it is slowly poisoning our society to death.

You may think you have already “Quit sugar” because you don’t add the white grainy stuff to your tea, and you always choose Diet Coke. But chances are you are actually still consuming loads of hidden sugar without realising it.

BEWARE of products advertised as containing “no added cane sugar”, or containing only alternative sweeteners, because many alternative sweeteners such as corn syrup, molasses, maple syrup, honey, and agave are actually very HIGH in fructose and therefore just as bad as cane sugar. I know what you’re thinking. “I don’t need to quit sugar. I already have a healthy diet, I don’t add sugar to my tea, I choose Coke Zero, and I very rarely consume confectionery. Days 1 and 2

If you have had a diet high in fructose for most of your life, you probably have a lot of fat around your liver, and a lot of inflammation in your digestive tract.
